September 29th-Indian Peaks

The night before we stayed over in Lafayette after a dinner party, which went fairly late. A late start was in order. So after a breakfast of chocolate cake and Monster for Brian we set out for Indian Peaks with the intent to do Mount Audubon. The clouds over the mountains looked ominous from Lafayette and continued to look so through Boulder and our new favorite town Ward. Ward is a town where every old clunky car is parked on the sides of the roads. This came about during the cold war when Boulder's nuclear escape plan was to go to Ward. So local residents put out their old beater cars to keep the Boulder residents from deciding to move up there. Obviously it worked because Ward is very small.
The colors on the way up to Ward were few and far between because there were to many pine trees versus the colorful aspen trees. What trees had changed were beautiful. A magnificant color yellow that words can't really do justice to. Even on a cloudy day, which

it was, the colors were unlike anything we've seen in Wisconsin in terms of the yellow color. We arrived at the Mitchell Lake trailhead to a temperature of 37 degrees and drizzle. It became obvious that Mount Audubon would wait for another day. Instead we took a hike nearby up to some lakes, Long and Isabelle. The hike was easy with little elevation gain. Long Lake was rather unspectacular, but quite long. Long Lake is below.
The next lake we came to was Lake Isabelle that is glacial fed and is right up against some mountains. The names of the mountains were unknown, and for the most part you couldn't see them because it was snowing up there in the clouds. We had our lunches of peanut butter and strawberry jam, honey crisp apples, and granola bars. Now that was a good lunch. After debating if we should go up a little further to a pass we decided to just head back to Windsor.

The route back took us through Ward again and to the Peak to Peak highway. The Peak to Peak is known for it's spectacular color this time of year so traffic was thick. The color was worth the traffic though. We stopped for a few pictures here and there. Observe them....

Day totals: 5 miles ish, 500 ft elevation gain, 3 hours ish.
